One merino cushion, two jobs: the mattress for your KO-COON Moses basket, and the breathable base of the Nesting Pod.

What is it?
A medium-firm merino wool cushion in a soft cotton sleeve. Use it as your Moses basket mattress, or add a cover to build it into a nest. It gives even, breathable support that holds your baby without letting them sink, and its firmness was designed with input from paediatric physiotherapists and occupational therapists. On its own it also works as a surface for supervised lounging and tummy time.

Do I need a sheet for it?
Yes — always use a slipcover over the mattress. The slipcover is your fitted sheet: it protects the merino from spills and daily wear, keeps airflow good, and is quick to wash. Keep a spare so there's always one on while the other's in the wash. A KO-COON Merino Puddle Pad underneath adds extra protection and airflow.

What's the difference between a slipcover and a nest cover? (Please read before you buy)
They are not the same thing:

  • Slipcover — this is the sheet for the mattress. It's made from single jersey knit and simply covers the base. It does not have the stretch to form a nest.
  • Nest cover — this is made from double knit (interlock), which has the stretch needed to tie up and over the border into the hammock nest shape. A nest cover can double as a slipcover if you want. A slipcover cannot be used as a nest cover — without the stretch, it won't form the nest.

So if you're buying purely to make a nest, you need a nest cover, not a slipcover. The slipcover is the more affordable option because it's a sheet, not a nest piece — it's the right buy for protecting your mattress, the wrong buy for building a nest.

Is it comfortable and supportive?
Merino regulates temperature — warm in winter, cool in summer — and is fully breathable, so your baby isn't lying on heat-trapping foam or artificial filling. The medium-firm support suits a developing spine, neck and head, and there are no synthetic fillings.

How do I care for it?
Machine wash on a gentle wool cycle — wool detergent, cold water, lowest spin. Do not tumble dry. Air out regularly and rotate the cushion weekly for even wear.

Size & materials: merino wool inner, soft cotton sleeve, approx. 82 × 50 × 5 cm, medium firmness. Fits the KO-COON Moses basket and Nesting Pod. Always use with a slipcover.
